With tracks spanning his entire 4-album discography, 'A Selection Of Background Music' is probably the definitive Lapse compilation.
The first disc (tracks 1 to 9) are the more tuneful, beat-heavy Lapse tracks selected to represent the accessible side of his music. On the other hand, disc two (tracks 10 to 18) are the real "background music", selecting heavily sound-driven pieces with lots of foley, experimentation and atmosphere.
This compilation's title was inspired by a family member, who - upon being shown songs from the Lapse album 'Rimebound' - said the following: "It's kinda like...background music you'd hear at a massage place".
